Moreover, I had no clear plan, because I had already fulfilled my dream: playing at Ajax. “Everything went wrong from the start, it just didn’t fit. I had a good year, got to know nice people. But it wasn’t good on the sporting field. “For a long time I had the hope that it would work out. After my first season, a new manager arrived with Marco Silva. I thought I might get a chance under him, but I was soon told that there were too many players and he didn’t trust me. That was good, because it allowed me to think about the next step.” last_img read more

Ramos: Real fans can go home happy again

first_imgSergio Ramos was delighted to send the Real Madrid fans home happy after the team produced an “outstanding performance” to record a hard-fought 2-0 win over Sevilla on Saturday. The European champions were fortunate not to be behind at the break after Sevilla missed the best chance of the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu, Sergio Escudero firing into the side-netting at the end of a crisp counter-attacking move.Yet Madrid were by far the better side throughout the second half, Casemiro eventually rewarding their dominance when his long-range curler in the 78th minute found the net despite goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik getting a hand to the ball. Luka Modric added a second in stoppage time, the Croatian midfielder slotting home when in the clear as Santiago Solari’s side leapfrogged their opponents to move into third place in the table. The late double ensured Ramos marked his 450th La Liga appearance with a well-deserved three points, even if both Madrid’s players and supporters had to patiently wait for the goals to arrive.”We needed to rediscover our best form. You can see today it was an outstanding performance,” Madrid’s captain said in his post-match interview on the pitch.”We dominated throughout the game and scored two goals, but the second goal came late. We could have added more, had we been a bit better in front of goal.”But we needed to win – and to win in style. It was a good win for our fans. We always feel connected with the fans in the stands.”I called for the fans because we are stronger when we are together. You have to keep that call alive so people keep believing in our play.”I believe that the fans can go home happy today.”Madrid – who needed an 88th-minute winner from Dani Ceballos to triumph 2-1 in the league at Real Betis last Sunday – are next in action in the Copa del Rey, hosting Girona on Thursday in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.last_img read more

Inter boss Conte out to catch up with Juventus

first_imgAntonio Conte says he found it easy to accept the role as Inter coach, but has warned his new team will have to work harder than anyone else to catch up with Juventus and Napoli. The former Juventus, Italy and Chelsea boss returned to his homeland to replace Luciano Spalletti at the helm of the San Siro outfit at the end of May.Inter finished fourth in Serie A last season, 21 points behind Juventus, and while the Bianconeri have won each of the last eight league titles, Inter have not finished higher than fourth since 2011. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare By hiring the man who coached Juve to the first three of those domestic crowns, Inter are hoping to narrow the gap on the Turin giants. While Conte was excited to join the Nerazzurri because they have a similar ambition, he says it will take great effort to achieve their goals.”It was easy to choose Inter,” he said at a press conference. “We found ourselves having the same vision and this was very important for me when I found myself talking to the manager and the president.”We found ourselves sharing the same ambition, the same desire to build something important knowing that we will have to go through a path made of hard work, effort and sweat.”The presence of director Giuseppe Marotta was certainly an incentive. He knows me well, he knows what my strengths and weaknesses are as I know his. I chose a club with great tradition, one of the most important in the world, it was easy to accept.”He added: “I am a person who has no limits and I don’t want others to set themselves at the beginning of the season. In setting limits I would immediately give the team excuses and I don’t want this to happen.”We know very well that in the last few years that a huge gap has been opened up for two teams, especially Juventus, but there is also Napoli, who have shown they can compete at a high level.”We know that we are called to work harder than others to fill this gap, but we must start with the ambition to give everything we have and in the end we will see what happens.”We need to talk little and work hard. ‘Head down and ride’ should be our motto, we will have to be fierce and focused on our goal, which is to bring stability. “If we want to have a season as challengers we must have these characteristics, we must work, sacrifice ourselves, question ourselves and every Sunday we will have to leave the field with a sweaty shirt. This is what I will demand from the players and I know they can do it.”Inter have signed Valentino Lazaro from Hertha Berlin during the current transfer window, while Matteo Politano and Eddie Salcedo made their moves to San Siro permanent, having spent last season on loan from Sassuolo and Genoa respectively.last_img read more

(Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)The biggest storyline for this upcoming NFL Draft is whether or not the Arizona Cardinals will select Kyler Murray. The Heisman Trophy winner has turned into the most polarizing prospect of his class in large part because of dual-sport background.Murray was a first-round pick for the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB Draft. Instead of jumping at the opportunity to play professional baseball, he returned to the Oklahoma Sooners to start at quarterback. In his only season as the starter in Norman, Murray had 4,361 passing yards, 1,001 rushing yards and 54 total touchdowns. He led the team to the College Football Playoff after defeating Texas in the Big 12 Championship.Although the Cardinals are expected to draft Murray with the No. 1 overall pick, many former players and executives have concerns with his stature. Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann spoke to TMZ Sports about Murray’s decision to choose football over baseball.“I think he should’ve taken baseball. That would have been my suggestion to him. But I’m thrilled that he wants to do what he wants to do, and I think everyone should follow a dream,” Theismann said. Here is the full video of his comments on Murray:Theismann makes it clear that he wants to see Murray succeed in the NFL. His one issue that he thinks the Oklahoma star will struggle with is throwing over larger defensive linemen. All the talk about his height isn’t enough to affect his stock, as the expectation is that he’ll be the first player off the board on April 25.[TMZ Sports]last_img read more

He remained unbeaten on 101 while Head made 59 not out.Earlier, Starc, who got the wicket of Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal on day two, bowled with pace and aggression to pick up the first two to fall on Sunday, then returned after lunch to polish off the tail and finish with figures of 5-54.advertisementKusal Perera retires hurt after blow to helmetKusal Perera did not return to bat for the touring side after being hit on his helmet and leaving the field. After opening batsman Karunaratne was forced to retire hurt on the second day after being hit by a Pat Cummins bouncer on the back of his neck, it was Perera’s turn to leave the field on the third morning. He retired hurt on 29 after a blow to his helmet by fast bowler Jhye Richardson while trying to duck under a short delivery. He took the impact flush on the side of his helmet with the neck protector flying off.The left-hander continued batting after twice being attended to by the team doctor but finally walked off an over later.Karunaratne returned to the crease after Perera’s departure and completed a gritty half-century before edging Starc to Kurtis Patterson at gully to be out for 59.Starc took 15 wickets in five tests during the India series and the opener against Sri Lanka but faced heavy criticism for some wayward bowling that prompted calls for Paine to take the new ball off his hands. The tall left-arm quick was back at his fiery best on Sunday, however, and tested the batsmen with short-pitched deliveries, one of which accounted for Dhananjaya de Silva. The batsman lost his balance while going for a pull shot and ended up dislodging a bail with his bat to be out for 25. That’s history now,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Wahab as saying at a press conference before leaving for England on Tuesday.”Now it’s about what we are going to do in the World Cup. Obviously, it’s the coach’s duty to get the best results from the players, and he wants players that can win matches for the team. I also wanted to be in the team, the only difference is I missed two years of (international) cricket. Now I am in and want to prove him (Arthur) wrong and justify my opportunity,” he added. The left-arm pacer has taken 102 wickets in 79 ODIs, including 24 wickets in 12 World Cup matches in 2011 and 2015.Wahab said he even had dreams about meeting skipper Sarfaraz Ahmad and Arthur.”I kept myself fully prepared for this World Cup even knowing that I am nowhere near the team. I even had dreams I was meeting Mickey Arthur and Sarfaraz Ahmad, and sometimes they would pick me, and reject me at other times,” said Wahab.advertisement”Around 10 days ago, I had a dream that Inzi bhai (Inzamam-ul-Haq, the chief selector) gave me a call and told me that I have been selected and this is my last chance. It was exactly how it happened when I was called and told about the decision. It is nothing less than make or break for a player who gets an opportunity to play in the World Cup,” he added.Talking about his game plan for the showpiece event, the 33-year-old said he will try to keep it simple on batting-friendly wickets in England.”It is important to keep things simple on batting wickets. Variations and reverse swing are key in the death overs. With the conditions dry and wickets hard in England, there will be a reverse swing and the team that does it better will have the advantage. I have expertise in the reverse swing so I will try to restrict the flow of runs in the final few overs,” he said.Along with Wahab, Pakistan has included Mohammad Amir in order to strengthen their bowling attack which seemed to be in total disarray in their recent drubbing against England in the five-match ODI series.Pakistan will begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies on May 31Also Read | After nightmarish IPL 2019, Kuldeep Yadav ready to win World Cup for IndiaAlso Read | World Cup Countdown: 1979 – Viv’s miracle shot, Sri Lanka and Canada’s debutAlso SeeFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Rahul Dravid was the highest scorer for India with 76 runs while Gautam Gambhir made 57 but the rest all flopped.Kohli, who was flown in as a replacement for the injured Yuvraj Singh in that tournament, recalled how he played a rash shot to get out couldn’t the sleep night after the game.”Tense was Champions Trophy 2009 where Yuvi fractured a finger and I was flown in and in two days time I was playing against Pakistan at Centurion. I hadn’t experienced anything like that before.”And I played a very bad shot. I couldn’t sleep till 6 in the morning, I kept looking at the ceiling thinking that’s it. I am finished. That was the most tensed moment I have experienced,” Kohli said on the eve of the India vs Pakistan World Cup 2019 match in Manchester on Saturday.advertisementThe Indian captain was also asked about the most funny incident he has witnessed in an India-Pakistan game in reply to which he narrated a story from the 2011 World Cup.”There have been many funny moments over the years. I can’t explain the incident properly, it happened during the World Cup 2011. In Mohali there was a little incident which I saw from the oppositions side which I elaborate here. The incident involved Shahid Afridi and Wahab Riaz. It was very funny in that pressure situation,” Kohli said. Also Read | Virat Kohli’s message for fans ahead of India vs Pakistan: It is a cricket match, enjoy itAlso Read | Virat Kohli on rivalry with Mohammad Amir: Not focussed on individual competitionAlso Read | India vs Pakistan: Rishabh Pant trains with MS Dhoni ahead of blockbuster World Cup clashAlso Read | India vs Pakistan: Recent history suggests India firm favourites against PakistanFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. New York Goes Nuts for Narcissa

New York Goes Nuts for Narcissa

first_img 10 Top Shelf Vodka Brands that are Actually Worth a Damn Naming your restaurant after a cow? Well, when that cow has a spunky personality and grazes at one of the best looking farms in Upstate New York, it makes a hell of a lot of sense. Meet Narcissa, the dairy cow and the restaurant, André Balazs’ newest culinary adventure.Located in The Standard East Village (yes, that Cooper Square hotel was gutted and is now a gloriously cool destination), Narcissa opened in February and has been the new farm-to-frenzy spot. Editors’ Recommendations The Ultimate Las Vegas Bachelor Party Guide for Grown-Ups London Opens World’s First Cheese Conveyor Belt Restaurant center_img How 2 Brooklynites are Reviving an Iconic Midwestern Supper Club Welcome to Funner, California (Yes, It’s a Real Place) Balazs partnered with Michelin-starred chef John Fraser to offer New York an opportunity to sample the crops from Balazs’ own farm, Locusts on Hudson. Chef John Fraser’s menu marries the clean flavors and impeccably-sourced ingredients of California cuisine with new techniques of roasting, rotisserie and slow-cooking.  He features seasonal, local and organic product. The healthy, multi-layered American menu offers both simplicity and sophistication. And that rotisserie thing, oh it’s the deal.  More to come on that. While Locusts on Hudson was known primarily as a dairy farm (enter Narcissa!), it was reborn four years ago to focus on vegetables and herbs which now support Chef John’s menu.We have dined several times already and highlights included the incredibly juicy and rich duck breast, the steamed black bass and lamb loin. But we could easily order a pile of sides for a meal – they were so sensational. Carrot fries with jalapeño-tofu dip,  Sunchokes, and twice-baked celery root with bacon are our top picks. But back to that rotisserie. The rotisseries are exposed for guests to watch beets and sweet potatoes rotate to crisp, caramelized perfection. The neighborhood restaurant features two distinct dining rooms, both featuring a lively, warm ambiance. One room hosts a large open kitchen, chef’s counter and vast windows, while the second room is accented with a grand, marble cocktail bar and seating which overlooks a charming private garden. Artist Andrew Kuo created a custom piece for the restaurant, adding a little color to the otherwise understated Nordic-inspired decor.Be sure to book ahead, this place is popping, and when you order a drink at the bar, be sure to raise a glass to Narcissa, her portrait has a special place right next to the bar.last_img read more
