Economic growth down slightly in November

Economic growth down slightly in November

first_img Share this article and your comments with peers on social media “While looking somewhat deep into the rear-view mirror, the decent month continues to point to a sturdy end to 2013 for the Canadian economy,” BMO chief economist Doug Porter wrote in a note. “The three-month trend in growth is now running at a nifty 3.8 per cent annualized clip and output is up 2.6 per cent from a year ago.” Statistics Canada said the output of goods-producing industries rose by 0.4 per cent in November, led by an increase in oil and gas extraction, which rose 2.6 per cent. Mining and quarrying was up 1.3 per cent, while utilities gained 2.1 per cent as cold weather boosted demand for electricity and natural gas. Manufacturing was down 0.5 per cent. The output of service industries rose 0.2 per cent as retail trade gained 0.8 per cent. Wholesale trade lost 0.6 per cent. TD Bank economist Leslie Preston said that with two out of three months now in hand for the fourth quarter, the economy looks to have built on the momentum of the third quarter. “However, the quarter likely ended on a sour note in December as severe winter weather led to power outages and otherwise crimped activity in many parts of the country,” Preston wrote in a report. “That leaves the economy with very weak momentum heading into the first quarter of 2014, which could now see a more modest growth tally.” Last week, the Bank of Canada said in its monetary policy report that economic growth in the second half of 2013 was better than expected and should pick up from an estimated 1.8 per cent in 2013 to 2.5 per cent both this year and next. The central bank expects global growth — led by stronger momentum in the U.S. — to rise from 2.9 per cent in 2013, to 3.4 per cent and 3.7 per cent in the following years. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said the modest growth was “an encouraging sign that Canada’s economy remains on the right track.” “With continued uncertainty in the global economy, it’s essential that we remain focused on creating jobs and growth here in Canada,” Flaherty said Friday. The federal budget is expected Feb. 11. The read on the economy came as Statistics Canada also revised December’s 45,900 job loss to 44,000 as part of its annual tweak of seasonal adjustment factors. The year-end unemployment rate was left unchanged at 7.2 per cent. Meanwhile, the Conference Board of Canada said its new composite leading index suggested the economy will grow in the first half of this year, but only modestly. The index, which looks at the performance of 10 components that track the short-term course of the economy, was up 0.3 per cent in December, matching gains in October and November. Akerman remembers Jim Foster with $10,000 gift designated for Children’s Legal Services

Akerman remembers Jim Foster with $10,000 gift designated for Children’s Legal Services

first_imgAkerman remembers Jim Foster with $10,000 gift designated for Children’s Legal Services Akerman remembers Jim Foster with $10,000 gift designated for Children’s Legal Services January 1, 2014 Regular Newscenter_img During his 16 years at Akerman LLP, Jim Foster was someone colleagues and friends often turned to for advice.“He was very much a mentor to younger lawyers and even to more experienced lawyers,” said Charles Brumback, managing partner of the Orlando office. “Having practiced for 40 years, he had a wealth of experience, and his background was such that if you asked Jim a question he had probably done it, and if he hadn’t done it, he knew somebody who had. So people were very quick to seek him out and ask for his advice on a variety of topics, legal and otherwise.”When Foster passed away March 16 at the age of 65, the firm decided to honor him with a $10,000 memorial gift to The Florida Bar Foundation designated for its Children’s Legal Services Grant Program, which funds projects to protect the legal rights of foster children and children with special-education, mental-health, and medical needs. The Foundation established the program in the early 1990s to create and energize a statewide network of children’s legal services providers.“In our view, this was an opportunity to make something good happen out of a very, very sad situation. We found an excellent, if not the perfect, recipient for this contribution,” Brumback said. “The program’s goals and accomplishments are directly in line with Akerman’s mission to make a difference in the community, particularly in the areas of education and youth development. And it’s a fitting tribute to Jim, given his passion for the law and for helping others.”Foundation President John Patterson expressed his appreciation for Akerman’s support of Children’s Legal Services. In addition to the firm’s gift, a number of Foster’s co-workers and friends made their own memorial contributions to the Foundation.“We are grateful that they chose to honor their colleague in this way,” Patterson said. “Their gift will benefit many children in need of the kind of help only a lawyer can provide.”last_img read more

Spanish side ‘close to closing’ agreement with Chelsea man – Have…

first_imgBarcelona are close to finding an agreement with Chelsea forward Willian to join them on a free in the summer transfer window. With the January transfer window now closed, the Spanish club are looking ahead to the summer and possible recruits. One of their targets is to find a new number nine, and while that venture continues, they are focusing on additions elsewhere as well. One of those is Willian, according to Marca, who report that that the Spanish club are ‘close to closing’ an agreement with the Brazilian.Embed from Getty ImagesHis current deal with Chelsea is set to expire in the summer, and despite ‘multiple attempts’ by the club to get him to renew, he has stood firm and insisted he wants to find a new club.Barça are one of the team to have shown ‘the most interest’ in signing him and have met with his representatives on a ‘couple of occasions’ to try and find an agreement. As he is in the final six months of his contract, Willian can sign an agreement with any club in Europe without breaking any rules. His representative agency, Sport Invest, are the same group that represents Philippe Coutinho, giving Barcelona something of an advantage over other interested parties. It’s not the first time the Chelsea forward has been linked with a move to the Nou Camp; indeed he was linked in the January transfer window, but Barcelona prefer to wait and get their man for zero cost at the end of his contract.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameDon’t Play This Game, it’s Addictive.Forge of Empires – Free Online GameUndo聽多多 Hearmore.asia1969年前出生的香港居民現可免費試戴頂尖的歐洲助聽器聽多多 Hearmore.asiaUndoDating.comThe Most Handsome Guys In Hong Kong On This Dating SiteDating.comUndoSmart Tech TrendOver 60?
